Rodrigo “Comprido” Medeiros vs Roberto ” Roleta” Magalhaes
We introduced Roleta (here in the white Gi) here in his 1998 Absolute final against Ze Mario Sperry. He returned the following year against newcomer, Rodrigo “Comprido” Medeiros.
In the 1999 Worlds, “Comprido,” which is “lanky” in Portuguese, was competing for the first time at black belt after receiving his promotion for winning the 1998 World Championship at Brown Belt. 1999 was a very good year for him as he won the Pan American, Brazilian Nationals and this match. He would go on to repeat as Absolute Champion in 2000, then moved on to coaching and competing in Masters divisions.
This match has two unique features: This is the first absolute final determined by a submission. Also, to date, this is the fastest recorded submission in an absolute final.
