We have showcased both Marcus and Rodolfo before in MFM, but against different opponents.
This match is the beginning of Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida’s complete domination in the sport. The prior year, Rodolfo and Marcus met in the quarterfinals of the absolute and Rodolfo secured a victory with an arm bar to become the eventual double champion in his weight and open classes. This would be the last time he would ever defeat him.
Since 2012, Marcus has won 13 world titles, 7 in his weight and 6 in the open class. Add to that 3 Pan titles, 2 No Gi Titles, 6 World Pro Titles and 2 ADCC titles and it is easy to conclude he is the best ever (with the one hiccup being this).
Lucas Lepri is King of the Lightweights. Just a few weeks ago, Lucas attained his 6th world title at that weight, more than anyone in history of IBJJF competition. In addition to his 6 worlds, he has 4 Pan titles and 1 European title.
He is well known to be one of the best guard passers in the game, but more impressively he rarely is scored on (and only been submitted twice in his career.)
This match was one of my favorites from the 2019 Europeans. Lucas entered the Open Class, in addition to his weight class, and his second match with Seif was a true test of our overused adage that “Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will give a smaller person the ability to beat a bigger, stronger opponent.”
As I watched this, I couldn’t help comparing it to a nature show about Koala Bears. Vicious, rabid, choking Koala Bears.
